A: Intercellular Lipids are oil based materials located between the cells of the Epidermis where they contribute to the all-important protective barrier function of the skin. A strong, healthy barrier is the first line of defense in the body’s immune system and it works to keep you safe from many different issues. In addition to protecting the skin from chemical, biological and environmental assaults, these lipids also regulate the retention of moisture within the Epidermis, helping to keep skin soft, supple and moisturized. Intercellular Lipids consist of Fatty Acids (Stearic and Palmitic), Sterols (Soya Sterol), Ceramide III and Phospholipids.

Q: What is the Intercellular Matrix and why is it important to skin care?
A: The Intercellular Matrix is located between the cells of the Dermis. It is the “mortar” that holds the skin cells together. It is composed of two major elements: Glycosaminoglycans (Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin Sulfate) and Natural Moisturizing Factors (Amino Acids, Sodium Lactate, and Sodium PCA). They are both powerful “hydroscopic” materials that attract and bind moisture within the Dermis. The increased moisture content plumps the skin and reduces the appearance and formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Increasing the moisture content also allows for the proper functioning, and enhances the transport, of vital nutrients.

A: Located primarily in the Epidermis, EFA’s consist of Linoleic and Linolenic Acid.

Dry skin is also known clinically as “Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency”. Along with the Intercellular (Interstitial) Lipids, EFAs play a major role in inhibiting moisture loss from the skin. They maintain optimum moisture content of the epidermis and prevent dry, flaky skin.

A: Emulsifiers help to combine all of the water and oil based ingredients together to create an elegant, stable formulation. Emulsifiers used in creams and lotions generally fall into 2 categories – Anionic or “soap-based” emulsions are formed by reacting a fatty acid with an Alkaline material such as Sodium Hydroxide or Triethanolamine. This is considered to be antiquated and has a higher potential for irritation; Non-Ionic emulsifiers are a more contemporary and elegant form of emulsions. Although they help create a more stable and less irritating formula, they have their drawbacks. Non-ionic emulsifiers are generally Ethoxylated. The Ethoxylation process produces Dioxanes, which are known carcinogens (e.g., PEG-100 Distearate, Polysorbates 20, 60-80, Steareth-2).

A: All commercially produced personal care products require some form of preservation to protect them from bacteria, fungus and mold (bacterial and microbial contamination) – helping to keep them safe for use. Several of the most commonly used preservatives are “formaldehyde donors”. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

All Tellurian products are formulated using preservatives that are from the most natural sources available, are mild and proven safe. Tellurian does not use any “formaldehyde donor" preservatives or parabens in any of our products.

Parabens are a group of food-grade, synthetic preservatives (butyl, propyl, methyl, ethyl) commonly used in beauty products. They are the most widely used preservatives in the beauty industry, and it is estimated that they are contained in more than 90% of all cosmetic products. Parabens, when used effectively, are more effective and less irritating than many other preservatives available for use in this industry.

Parabens ensure a long shelf life and inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast, mold and fungus. They protect products from many forms of contamination, keeping products safe for use. The scientific community, the FDA and the American Cancer Society have stated that parabens are safe for long term use in cosmetic products. Several studies have shown some preliminary evidence that parabens may influence breast cancer and reproductive abnormalities – but the results have been inconclusive. More studies and testing must be done to make any definitive statements.

They are oily, colorless, odorless liquids that do not evaporate readily, and are often used in fragrances and nail polish. Although generally considered safe by the scientific community, studies now suggest that phthalates may cause birth defects, breast cancer, and an increase in asthma.

A: The Tellurian Treatment Collection products are designed to address specific skin conditions. These products are not intended to be used as moisturizers.
